Honey App Review: Save Money Automatically or Scam?

This blog is supported by sponsors.

If you’re anything like me you hate having to pay full-price while shopping online. Well, the Honey App claims to help us save some money by searching for legit coupon codes, deals and discounts online. Chances are you are wondering whether it truly works, that’s why you are checking out some Honey App reviews.

Well, by the time you’re done reading this review, you’ll know everything good, bad and ugly about Honey. So, let’s get into it, shall we?

What Is Honey?

Honey found at www.joinhoney.com is a web-based app and browser extension that claims to be able help you find coupon codes for the sites you are shopping at and apply them at checkout, thereby saving you money and coupon searching time. According to CrunchBase, the Honey app was co-founded by entrepreneurs George Ruan and Ryan Hudson on October, 2012, and is currently headquartered in Los Angeles, CA.

How Does Honey App Work?

So before you knew about the Honey App, you were probably opening 35 tabs searching for coupons and promo codes every time you saw the ‘’do you have a coupon code?’’ prompt at checkout while shopping online.

Well, we all know finding legit coupon codes that way is like trying to win the lottery. To save you some precious time, here’s how the app works.

Once you have the app installed on your browser’s toolbar, it scours the internet for legit coupon codes in real time. To see it in action, go to any supported retailer or store and do your shopping as normal.

During checkout, the app searches for available coupons in your cart and applies them automatically before you confirm your purchase.

The extension's button also lights up when you’re checking out something and there’s a deal, coupon or promo code associated with it currently running.

So every time you shop at online stores like Target, Amazon and the like, Honey tells you of available coupon codes at checkout and once you apply them, boom! You get your discount.

Did you know you can also get coupons, promo codes and gift cards at SwagBucks.com, all the while making real money doing basically what you do online like watching videos, visiting websites and muc more? Furthermore they have a SwagButton web browser extension that also updates you on deals and discounts in real time. So it's something you may want to consider as well.

Honey App Features

Automatic coupons and promo codes? Sweet! But there’s more. Here are a few features you can use to score even more discounts.

Submit your own coupon codes – If you know of other coupons from elsewhere, say Amazon.com, let Honey know of them and if they work, Honey will give you points just for sharing. You can use these points to get even more discounts.

Amazon Deal Tracker – Since most Amazon coupon codes are very product specific, the Amazon deal tracker feature informs you of better deals and cheaper products within Amazon. So, if you are looking for a laptop, for example, Honey will let you know if there’s a cheaper option than the one you landed on.

Droplist – If you are window-shopping for something but not quite yet ready to buy it, add it to your “droplist”and Honey will put it on a watch-list and then tell you when the item’s price drops by 5% or more.  You can even check the current cheapest price of the item in real time by clicking on the Honey button.

Refer a friend – Honey gives you a referral link that you can use to spread the word. Every time your referral makes a purchase (up to $1,000) Honey gives you 500 points (equivalent to $5) that you can use to buy something else for yourself on the app.

HoneyGold – Similar to what they have on SwagBucks.com, Honey also has a cash-back reward program that earns you points every time you shop. Every time you shop using the app you get some HoneyGold points that you can use to get even more discounts.

How Do I Join Honey?

As mentioned earlier, the Honey App is a browser extension. It’s also totally free to download and use. To get started, all you need to do is install it to your browser. A simple web search of it will take you to where you can download it depending on the browser you are using.

The Honey App extension works on the web versions of Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Microsoft Edge and Opera browsers only. You can’t use it on mobile devices. Once you install it, the Honey App button will appear on the top right corner of your browser.

You don’t need to create an account with your email to get publicly available coupon codes. But with an account, you’ll get personalized and exclusive Honey App deals and coupons codes.

Which Stores and Sites Does Honey App Work With?

Honey claims to work with thousands of stores and online retailers. We might not be able to list all of them right now. But here are a couple of them.

  • Walmart, Amazon and Target
  • Kohl’s and JC Penney’s
  • Papa John’s and Pizza Hut
  • Groupon and Living Social
  • Shutterfly, ThredUP and Tiny Prints
  • Starbucks, Michael’s Crafts and Cafe Press

The Honey app is also available in Australia, Canada and the UK. So, you can also use it while shopping at some international stores from these countries.

What We Like About Honey App

No fake coupon codes

The coolest thing about Honey is that every coupon code works. You can now stop going through hundreds of those lame ass coupon websites that give you codes probably won’t work. So, you can claim your 10 seconds of fame with your wife whenever you’re getting her something on Amazon.

Honey App Complaints

In all kindness, there’s pretty much nothing wrong with the Honey App. It’s free and saves you money. What else would we need from them? But if you had to twist our arm about some complaints against the honey app, here may be some minor ones to consider.

No BBB Profile

At the time of writing this review, they don’t have a listing with the Better Business Bureau. That may or may not be a deal breaker if you swear by a BBB recommendation.

Doesn’t work on mobile

You can’t save money on the go, since the app doesn’t support mobile browsers. But hey, there’s always the SwagBucks.com app that lets you earn real money while shopping with your phone or tablet.

Is Honey App Legit?

Sure it is! There’s no red flag as of yet to suggest any monkey business. You get to save time and money and earn a little more with the app’s features. Once you have it installed, it will tell you where to find the cheapest deals.

But then again, unlike SwagBucks.com that has an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau, they can probably wok on that. You can’t use the extension on your phone, so that’s probably another minor annoyance.

But all in all, every time you are out for great deals on Amazon.com or any other supported store, you can use Honey to save some money.

Well, that’s my two cents about the Honey App. Have you used this or any other similar app? Let us know on the comments section below! You can also check out Honey’s FAQs page if you need help.
