Bluefly Review: Buyer Beware or Totally Safe?

This blog is supported by sponsors.

Although the internet makes it easier to shop, it also makes it easier to be scammed. I'm sure you know this already and that's probably why you're going through a couple of Bluefly reviews to know whether it's safe to shop there.

Well, we have everything you need to know, including the good, the bad and the ugly. So, without further ado, let's get cracking, shall we?

What is Bluefly?

Bluefly found at www.bluefly.com is an online store selling women's, men's and kids' clothing, jewelry, accessories and home décor items, with special preference to original designer fashion. According to CrunchBase, Bluefly has been around since 1998 with headquarters in New York, NY. Bluefly is owned and operated by co-founders Carly Rosenberg, Ken Seiff and Scott Erdman.

Bluefly Prices

Items at Bluefly are priced differently, and most of them especially designer clothing being heavily discounted. Let’s take a closer look at some examples.

Women’s clothing including dresses, tops, tights, trousers, official and casual wear excluding designer items average between $20 and $100. The most expensive designer items peaking at a little over $1000. Men’s clothing including shirts, jackets, jeans and pants go for anywhere between $50 and $500 with the most popular designer clothing priced at a little over $500.

Women’s accessories including handbags, scarves, hats and hair products average $100 a piece, the most popular non-discounted items going for as little as $50 and as much as $800, similar to men’s accessories. You can get men’s jewelry and luxury items for as little as $40, with women’s jewelry being the most popular under the jewelry category, averaging $100 a piece.

You can find boys’ clothing and girls’ clothing for as little as $10, but most items under this category are priced anywhere above $50, unles it's designer clothing, of which the price can reach highs of $1,000.

As mentioned earlier, most items are heavily discounted, especially designer items above the $1000 mark.

Bluefly Refund & Return Policy

It’s always good to know what will happen if there’s something wrong with your order.

Bluefly provides a 14 day window for returns. But you can’t return any item marked as ‘’final sale’’. They don’t do exchanges, sorry. To get a refund, just make sure you haven’t used the item and the packaging, labels and tags are all intact.

You can’t return jewelry if you shipped internationally. But you can return these if you shipped in the United States within 21 days of receiving the item. According to Bluefly, they take 10 business days to process returns, while refunds can take 5-10 business days to process.

You’ll be charged a standard $7.95 for shipping the item back to them, an amount they’ll deduct from the overall cost of your order. You can’t return an item if you ordered from outside the United States, To find out more on their refund and returns policy, you can check out their returns FAQs page here.

What are Bluefly Payment Options?

You can pay using either of the following options

  • PayPal
  • Visa
  • MasterCard
  • American Express
  • Affirm
  • Amazon Payment

Bluefly Shipping

Even though they claim they ship for free, it seems standard shipping will cost you an additional $4.95 and $14.95 for expedited shipping,

Bluefly ships to the contiguous 48 States, the District of Colombia, Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico. They also ship internationally. Standard shipping takes up to 10 days, while expedited shipping takes up to 5 days, including processing time.

For international orders, you’ll have to go through the checkout process to know exactly how much it’ll cost you and how long your order will take to arrive. They apply such charges as freight, fuel, taxes, brokerage, etc. I’ll be damned!

You can always skip all that and order from Amazon.com and get FREE guaranteed two-day Amazon Prime Delivery.

Bluefly primarily ships via UPS, UPS SurePost, FedEx, FedEx SmartPost, or the US Postal Service. They’ll send you a notification to your mail once your order is ready to ship, and a tracking number two days later if you need one.

Bluefly Customer Service

You can contact Bluefly customer service through either Live chat or Email at flyrep@bluefly.com. Unfortunately they don't appear to have a telephone number you can use at the time of this review.

Bluefly Coupons or Promo Codes

There are no signs of coupons or promo codes, just discount cuts on almost every other item. Fortunately sites like Ebates.com will give you cash back, coupons and $10 just for signing up! And speaking of discounts, did you know sites like Swagbucks.com will help you earn free gift cards and cash for things you do online? You can then use them to shop for free on sites like Bluefly or anywhere else. Or you can save tons of cash shopping for similar clothing at Amazon.com.

What We Like About Bluefly

Most of the items especially designer wear are of good quality and they are reasonably affordable.

They also have an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau, for those of you who live and die for a company’s BBB status.

Bluefly Complaints

This is the part of the review where we tell it like it is. There are a few red flags we thought you should know about. It is up to you to decide which are the deal breakers or not.

Good luck getting your money back

It seems the biggest problem with Bluefly comes in when they take your money. A good number of customers complained of having a hard time getting refunds. They had to jump through hoops to prove their case. Also, if you cancel an order, you might end up paying for it still. Customers say if you cancel, that doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll refund what you paid right there and then. You have to take it up with customer service first.

Don’t order ‘’Final Sale’’ items

Be careful when ordering items marked as Final Sale items. You can neither return nor get a refund of these items, if something goes wrong. According to some previous customers, some Final Sale items, which were advertised as new turned out to be anything but. If you try and contact customer service they’ll feed you some ‘’term of sale’’ bullshit up until you suck it in and walk away.

Awful Customer Service

If you order from Bluefly, just know their customer service is one of the worst we’ve ever heard of, going by what people are saying out there. Phones go unanswered no matter how many voicemails you leave, don’t bother with LiveChat, they are never online. It appears your best shot is Email, but they’ll take their sweet time getting back. They do a commendable job dodging questions and they’ll say anything to fend you off.

“Not what I Ordered”

There are several complaints on their BBB page of customers not getting exactly what they ordered.  And furthermore some have complained of getting poor quality stuff, or sometimes something totally different from what they saw online.

Bluefly Alternatives

You may not be a big fan of some of the complaints against Bluefly. Fortunately there are other options such as Ebates.com and  Amazon.com which is well known for its customer service and great prices. You’re also sure of what you’re signing up for with the FREE Guaranteed 1-2 Day Amazon Prime Delivery.

Is Bluefly A Scam?

Bluefly is not an outright scam. They have a positive BBB rating and have been around for close to two decades now. But I would definitely shop elsewhere, if there’s any truth in what hundreds of customers are saying about it.  You may need to stomach weeks of waiting for your order, and pray that everything is in one piece.

They also have issues returning money, and their returns and refunds policy is anything but transparent. Their customer service is near non-existent, so good luck following up on an issue.

That said, you can find similar affordable clothing options at Amazon.com and skip through the long ass shipping time at Bluefly and take advantage of the FREE guaranteed two-day Amazon Prime Delivery.

Also, if you are all about getting the best deals anywhere, you may want to check out Ebates.com and Swagbucks.com which allows you to earn free cash and gift cards for things that you already do online. You can then use the free cash and gift cards you earn anywhere and essentially get items for free.

Well, that’s my two cents about Bluefly.com. Do you have an experience with Bluefly? Leave us a comment in the comments section below! You can also check out their FAQs page if you have questions or comments about Bluefly.

Until next time
